I think building a relationship with your subject can make or break a photograph. People tend to tense up and become self aware whenever a camera is present. Spending time with your subject helps them become comfortable with the camera. The best images come when the subject is acting naturally and not inhibited by the presence of the camera. Some documentary photographers such as Bruce Davidson or Larry Clark spent months and in some instances years with their subjects getting to know every facet of there daily lives. A great example is Davidson’s series of images depicting life in Harlem over the course of the year.
I have learned a lot over the past month photographing Alvin Kaufman. Focusing on one subject over an extended period of time has helped me to focus beyond the superficial aspect of the subject. Showing the true nature and individuality of ones subject is what will captivate the viewer.
